Nephalem: Chapter 1

Do you know?  Do you know of the unbelievable war, that prelude the Book of Genesis?  It was never written in the Scriptures for humans had no need to know.

It is merely a legend among many of the angels.  Very few ever thought it occurred. Only the oldest of angels know of the tale of creation that was not meant to happen.

The tale says there were two entities of great power.  The one deity of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam and Dialos, the King of Demons.  They built armies in their separate parts of the spirit realm.

Both would send wave after wave against each other in the vast emptiness of the spirit realm.  No one would admit the war was a massive stalemate. Angels would be reborn in Heaven and demons would do the same in darkest part of the spirit realm.

There is no sense of time in the spirit realm,  so none could tell how long it lasted. Eventually many on both sides grew tired of fighting or began a forbidden romance with one they faced in battle.

They began to desert and meet in a part of the spirit realm no battles have been fought.  Once hundreds of angels and demons gathered, they combined their powers to create a physical plane of existence.  When they were finished the plane was composed of one sun and one lush planet. On that planet the deserters intermingled and gave life to a new race.  A hybrid of angels and demons, they were called Nephalem.

Some of the angels and demons left to try to spread word of this paradise they created.  Unknown to them, while they were outside the spirit realm they began to age. They became vulnerable to time.  While in the spirit realm they were immune to time because it didn’t exist.

Upon returning to their original homes, they were known as deserters.  For their punishment, they were immediately executed. If they die anywhere in the spirit realm other than their place of creation, they will be reborn.  If they die inside their place of creation, the angel, demon, or other spirit is destroyed.

In time, the Nephalem developed their powers through combat training.  They eventually learned how to enter the spirit realm at will. Many entered, hoping to find a missing parent.  Instead, they were attacked by patrolling angels or demons. On occasion, they would meet a relative that didn’t desert.  In both cases, they had to show their mantel.

They quickly proved their prowess  in battle, and were offered a place on the side they encountered.  Each Nephalem that survived their trial by combat chose a side for themselves.  Some were offered great rewards to side with them, others sided because they were related to a member directly and they knew it.

Unfortunately they would cross paths with another Nephalem on the opposite side.  The Nephalem would not willingly fight their own, for they had a sense of kinship.  Instead of trying to convince the other to defect, they turned on their allies, angel or demon.  Every such battle became a brawl.

The only result in a battle with Nephalem in both a demon and angelic army is a Nephalem victory and having no choice but to return home for betraying their allies, or a costly victory for the angels or demons.  Both angels and demons began to see the Nephalem as a wild card faction, a dangerous wild card.

The deity of heaven sent the most powerful and most trusted angel he had, archangel Lucifer to meet with Dialos about the Nephalem.  Lucifer arrived at the gate of the demon’s stronghold. With a thunderous voice, Lucifer said “Dialos, my Lord has sent me with a proposal.  I will only speak with you, no one else.”

The gates opened and the giant black and ember light mass of Dialos emerged past the gates.  Dialos appeared humanoid with ram like horns that pointed in the line of sight and it’s feet had med length skeletal toes.  As Dialos approached, it became clear to Lucifer that he was no match for it. The distance from his flat feet to the highest arch of his wings, was just above Dialos’s ankle.

“Is your Lord ready to surrender?” Dialos asked.

“My Lord will never surrender to you.”

“Then we have no business to discuss.”

As Dialos turned away Lucifer shouted “It’s about the Nephalem.”

“Why should I care about the Nephalem.”

“We both lost many to them.  Most have not been reborn from the battles where they fight.  My Lord can’t tolerate them anymore. I am sure you are just as irritating by them as well.”

“What does your Lord propose?”

“We join forces to eliminate them from existence.  We know where they are, but both of you need to work together so both armies can enter with all of our power.  After they are destroyed and we both recover our strength, we continue where we left off.”

Dialos turned it’s head.  “I agree to this truce.”

They both went back to there respective strongholds and prepared for their joint attack.

Together, Dialos and the Diety combined there powers to let their armies enter the world of the Nephlem.  The armies of angels entered first. The Nephalem put up a strong resistance against the angels. The demon armies came as needed reinforcements.  After every Nephalem lay dead, along with hundreds of demons and angels, the plane of existence was destroyed.

The angels found out they were deceived.  For it wasn’t long after the battle, Dialos and his demon hoard marched toward the Golden Gates.  The angels took heavy losses in the battle. A fourth of the fighters the angels had died against the Nephalem.  They were outnumbered two hundred to one with Dialos at the head of the hoard.

80% of the angels that survived were in no condition to fight.  The handful of remaining fighters stood their ground in front of the Golden Gates.  For most, this battle was the first time they ever fought a demon. The battle was a disaster.  The angels in front of the gate were overwhelmed by the demons’ first wave.

As Dialos approached the gates, Lucifer and his four closest brothers took up arms to face Dialos.  Though each of them were badly wounded, they went forth with Lucifer holding a spear and his brothers with grappling chains.

Lucifer’s brothers chained Dialos’s arms and legs.  And with a strong pull, they forced it to the ground, and Lucifer dived straight down with the one hand at the base of the spear and the other arm fully extended to keep it on target.  With the force built from the dive and Lucifer’s steady hold of the spear, the spear punctured Dialos’s exoskeleton and skewed his heart. The blow made Dialos roar painfully and his body began to disintegrate.

Confused and shocked by what had happened, the demon hoard retreated with great haste.  The demons were finally defeated. Lucifer and his closest brothers were revered as heroes worthy of legends, until the events of Book of Genesis began.
