Our last research assignment was a ‘wild card’ assignment. We chose a topic in recent publication and presented it. I had a Newsweek magazine at home that had Autism as the cover story. I thought, ‘may as well take a look’. Its issue date was the same week as the wild card project, so I thought that might be useful. As I read this article, it talked about the ends of the autism spectrum. At the high functioning end was something I recognized. At the high functioning end of the spectrum was a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome.
My diagnosis I was told years before was part of the autism spectrum. It wasn’t disheartening. It was more like an epiphany that brought relief. I finally understood why I was so different from everyone else.
